RUNNING BEYOND OURSELVES
Before I ever had any formal academic instruction in theology, one of my earliest musings was that physical exertion brings with it a deep form of spiritual nourishment. It is a conviction – a totem I still hold dear – that to push one’s body beyond comfort is to open one’s soul to grace. Every morning I exercise, and not just the gentle kind. It is sweat-producing, heart-pounding, sometimes even floor-collapsing exertion. Yes, it speaks to my own drive and determination, but more importantly it is an exercise in humility. If I have already pushed past my breaking point before breakfast, what in the day ahead could possibly break me?
That reflection came into sharp focus when I took part in the Women’s 5k here in Launceston at the end of September. It was my first time in the event, and I joined to support a friend who is currently battling cancer. The day was filled with joy: the energy of thousands running together, the encouragement shared along the way, and most of all the delight of seeing students, families and staff from St Thomas More’s Catholic School throughout the course. At the finish line, students came up to greet me, sharing their times and their stories with infectious enthusiasm.
For the record – and not that I am counting – I placed 46th out of nearly 3,000 runners (ran under a pseudonym). The official time was 21 minutes, 36 seconds, though my watch had me crossing in 20 minutes, 8 seconds, which would have placed me 22nd. Not bad for a 40-year-old! Yet the real gift of the morning was not the place or the time, but the reminder that we run best when we run not only for ourselves, but for one another. Supporting my friend through the struggle with cancer reminded me that the most meaningful exertion is that which gives beyond the self.
As a school community, I hope we continue to encourage our young people to find joy and discipline in daily exercise. Establishing the habit of movement – whether through sport, running, or simple routines – builds resilience of both body and spirit. Parents play a vital role here: modelling healthy practices, supporting routines, and holding space for their children to grow in strength and confidence. If we can nurture in our children a love of activity that goes hand in hand with humility, community, and generosity, then we are indeed fostering greatness.
Mr Casimir Douglas

Dear Parents and Carers,
SALUTATION
Grace to you and peace.
ATHELTICS CARNIVAL
This Wednesday (15th October), our school community gathered at the St Leonard’s Athletics Track for our annual Athletics Carnival. The day was blessed with great spirit, and a sea of colour as our students competed in their House groups, cheered on their teammates, and celebrated one another’s achievements. The atmosphere was electric; every sprint, jump, and throw was met with waves of encouragement from peers, parents, and staff alike. It was a shining example of the positive culture and camaraderie that makes St Thomas More’s such a special community.
Individual athletic performances stood out throughout the day, with students striving for their personal bests and setting new benchmarks of excellence. Yet, it wasn’t only about individual efforts, the Houses came alive with chants, cheering, and unwavering support. The volume of encouragement from the sidelines truly lifted every competitor, and the smiles told the story of a day where sport and spirit were equally celebrated.
A highlight came in the much-anticipated House and community relays, culminating in the showdown between staff, Grade 6 students, and parents (thank you Jason Cassidy, Lara Gebka, Chris Massey & Brie de Virieux!). With pride on the line (and perhaps a little too much competitiveness from the staff team), the race quickly became a spectacle. Parents gave it their all, students ran with grit and determination, and staff… well, some looked like they had confused the 100 metres with a leisurely park run! After baton fumbles, questionable sprinting techniques, and a finish that had the crowd on their feet, the race came down to the final metres where Staff Team comprised of Mrs Chugg, Mr Saunders, Mrs Hartley & Mr Stacey claimed victory, glory, and bragging rights for the Staff!.
Of course, the carnival is about more than medals: it is about community. We are so grateful to everyone who made the day such a success. Thank you to all our staff for their tireless organisation and encouragement of students, to the parent volunteers for generously giving their time, to Mr Rik Bryan for the enormous amount of behind-the-scenes preparation, and to Mr Nick Stacey for his coordination and leadership of the event.
And now our students wait in eager anticipation of the announcement of the winning House, which will occur at our school gathering this coming Monday (20th October) morning in the Piazza!

GRADE 4 CAMP
This week, our Grade 4 students made history as the first group from St Thomas More’s to embark on their very own camp adventure! From Thursday 16th to Friday 17th October, the students travelled to Camp Banksia in Port Sorell for two days of fun, friendship and challenge — an experience designed to build independence, confidence and connection.
The camp began with team-building activities, reflection sessions and The Ultimate Quest through Port Sorell — a challenge that encouraged teamwork, curiosity and perseverance. As the day unfolded, students supported one another, laughed often and embraced every new experience. The evening included a prayer and gratitude reflection led by Mr Douglas, followed by a much-loved Teddy Bear Parade, where every camper proudly introduced their bedtime companion to the group before lights out.
Friday saw the group venture to Tasmazia, navigating the maze together before gathering for a final gratitude circle — a fitting end to two days filled with laughter, courage and connection. Throughout the experience, students embodied the key principles of The Resilience Project — gratitude, empathy and mindfulness — and the Making Jesus Real values of kindness, encouragement and joy.
A huge thank you to our Grade 3/4 teaching staff for their guidance and supervision, and to the students for their enthusiasm and positivity. As our first ever Grade 4 Camp, this was a special milestone for our school, and we look forward to building on this tradition for future classes.
REHEARSE THE POSITIVE SUPERHEROES!
Our Rehearse the Positive superhero capes were proudly passed on again at our Tuesday morning Prayer Assembly (14th October). Each week, these capes are passed to new students who have been shining examples of kindness, respect, and inclusion through their daily actions — the simple habits that make St Thomas More’s such a welcoming and positive community.
This week’s superhero cape recipients were:
-
Isla Smith: (Grade 2 MacKilop) – for always being kind and caring towards others, including everyone in games, and spreading positivity through simple, thoughtful actions like sharing a smile.
-
May Gill: (Grade 5, Chisholm) – for being friendly, kind, and a great listener who makes others feel happy and included — even sharing her pencil case with others!
-
Charlie: (Grade 2, Tenisom) – chosen by Millie (Prep) for her kindness in including others in play across different grades and always greeting others by name.
? Congratulations to Isla, May, and Charlie! Each wore their cape proudly as champions of Rehearse the Positive, reminding us that greatness grows from small, consistent acts of kindness and respect.
‘APPLYING KNOWLEDGE’ – ALL SYSTEM PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DAY
This Monday (13th October), Catholic Education Tasmania held a professional learning day, Applying Knowledge, for all teachers and teacher assistants focused on the Science of Learning and the INSIGHT initiative. The sessions were livestreamed to school sites throughout the State, and featured a combination of live and school-facilitated learning opportunities, designed to strengthen the capacity of educators in supporting students to transfer, apply, and demonstrate their understanding in deep learning activities.
The professional learning featured keynote sessions from internationally recognised thought leaders in evidence-based teaching practice: Dr Simon Breakspear and Dr Nathaniel Swain. These sessions challenged and inspired our staff to reflect on how knowledge is not only acquired but meaningfully applied in the classroom. The school-facilitated workshops, led by our Leadership Team, provided time for our teachers to collaborate on Mode B Planning, while our Teacher Assistants engaged in tailored professional learning through the CANVAS course.
All of our teachers and teacher assistants attended the event at St Thomas More’s Catholic School in Josephite Hall. The gift of this day for the pedagogical development of our staff is invaluable to one of our key goals from the Learning Domain of our 2025 Annual Priorities:
“To support Catholic Education Tasmania’s INSIGHT initiative; our vision for the 2025 school year is that the principles of evidence-based high impact teaching practice will be implemented and evident in every class, every day.”
I wish to thank Catholic Education Tasmania for their leadership of this professional learning experience, our staff for their positive engagement in this learning opportunity, and to the families of our school for making alternate arrangements for the care of their children to make this day viable for our system.
To learn more about the pedagogical principles that underpin our educational approach, you may wish to watch the YouTube video below produced by author and speaker, Tom Sherrington, unpacking the Barak Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction.
ANDREW CHINN VISIT
Next Friday, 24th October, we are delighted to welcome back Andrew Chinn, one of Australia’s most loved Catholic musicians and educators. Andrew is famous in these parts – he has visited hundreds of Catholic schools across the country and brings with him a day of joy, music, and faith that our students never forget.
In fact, he’s even been telling children in schools across Australia that he knows a Principal at St Thomas More’s in Tasmania whose favourite song is Let It Go from Disney’s Frozen! The students here think this is hilarious – and it has only added to their excitement about his return visit.
Andrew will spend the whole day with us, leading workshops with each grade throughout the day. These sessions will be a chance for our children to sing, learn, and share in the music of faith in a fun and interactive way. The day will conclude with a whole school concert, where all classes will come together to sing some of Andrew’s much-loved songs.
Many of our students already know Andrew’s music well and are eagerly looking forward to singing with him in person again. We warmly thank Mrs Belinda Taylor for her organisation of this wonderful opportunity for our students. It promises to be a day full of smiles, voices lifted in song, and memories that will last long after the final note fades.
Trust me, if you play the song below to your child, they will know all the words and all the actions!

Our staff are now in the final stages of constructing class groups for next year, following a comprehensive and collaborative process designed to ensure balanced and thoughtfully composed classes for all students.
The school will also soon commence a recruitment process for Teacher Assistant positions to be filled for next year, and when the appointments have been finalised, these will be communicated to the school community along with the assignments for all ancillary staff.
FINAL GREETING
May the grace of Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
God bless,
Mr Casimir Douglas

Please note, if your child/ren will be absent from school for a period longer than two weeks (10 days) you will need to complete a Request for Student Absence form. This can also be found on the school website under the 'Our School' and 'Forms' tabs. You will need to forward this to the office, the Principal can then approve the leave.
Also as a reminder, if your child/ren will be absent from school you are able to complete this absence on your Compass app under 'Attendance'.

Welcoming Andrew Chinn!
We are thrilled to welcome Mr Andrew Chinn to our school on Friday, 24th October for a day of joyful music and faith-filled workshops with our students, culminating in a whole school concert at 2:00pm. Parents are warmly invited to attend — standing room only!
Andrew was a teacher in Catholic schools around Sydney for 20 years, teaching every grade from Kindergarten to Year 6 — including two years in Kindergarten/Prep! Since then, he has become one of the most well-known Catholic musicians in schools, with his songs like These Hands, Rainbow, An African Blessing, and Rise Up! sung by children across Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, and Ireland.
We use Andrew’s music regularly in our class prayers, Prayer Assemblies, whole school Masses, and liturgies — so students are sure to recognise and love the music they’ll be singing with him on the day!
He has released 15 albums, 6 picture books, and created an amazing online resource for teachers: www.butterflyhouse.online. Andrew has visited nearly 1,200 schools around the world, sharing his gift of music and faith.
He lives in Wollongong with his wife Bernadette and their two beach-loving Shetland Sheepdogs, Mollee and Elbee. He’s a proud dad of four daughters and grandad to TEN grandchildren! He also cheers on the Illawarra Hawks, Sydney Swans, and Brisbane Broncos.
His music is available on Spotify and Apple Music — feel free to have a listen before the big day!
