Jesus does not command us to love ‘God’ in the abstract. Teaching Jew to Jew he says: ‘You shall love the Lord your God’ – the Lord who had rescued the Jewish people from slavery. So, commanding a love which responds to an initiative of Divine Love.
Why wouldn’t one respond ‘heart, mind, strength, soul’ in gratitude for the gift of life itself, for some particular person or incident, for the beauty and grandeur of nature, for rescue from some situation which seemed to engulf us? And if the Lord God loved you in such a way, why wouldn’t you love yourself?
Then you can properly ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’. There is nothing sentimental in his teaching from Leviticus 19:18 and the preceding verses. Jesus was pointing to the system of social justice which looked after the poor and which did not exploit workers. It is up to us as global citizens of the 21st century to recognise as ‘neighbours’ those beyond our borders and to love them in the practical ‘Levitical’ way.
Fulfilling the Dual Command, we guard against the extremes of religious piety or social activism and become Christian humanists loving God and neighbour.
We might pause a moment to pray in responsive gratitude to the Lord God, and to commit ourselves to loving our neighbour, hoping to hear the words of Jesus Christ: ‘You are not far from the Kingdom of God.’

Dear Families,
Today is World Teachers’ Day in Australia. World Teachers’ Day is an International Day to celebrate the great work all of our teachers do to educate and support our students. I wish to thank all the team here at St Thomas More’s who go above and beyond to educate and support all our children.
Last weekend was another great weekend of Basketball, this time for our G3/4. Well done to all our students who participated and to our Boys Div 2 Team, who ended up being Runners Up in the Div 1 competition. A huge effort. We wish them all the best as they prepare for the State Championships. Also, a big thank you to all coaches, managers, scorers and Mrs Zegveld for coordinating the event.
Due to the wild weather today the NIJSSA Athletics Carnival was postponed. The backup day is next Friday, we’ll confirm details early next week.
Over the past couple of weeks, we have had our Kinder Orientation Days. It has been great to welcome all our little ones and their parents as they prepare to commence Kinder next year.
Monday is a public holiday, enjoy a great day with your family.
Don’t forget our Family Fiesta is next Friday. Tickets are limited, if you haven’t got yours yet, make sure you do it today.
Have a great week.

PRINCIPAL
Congratulations to those students who received awards today:
Congratulations to our 6 teams who competed at the Northern Primary Basketball Tournament for Grade 3 and 4 last weekend.
Thanks to our coaches and managers for your significant support and encouragement of our teams. We wouldn't have been able to participate if it wasn't for our wonderful parents who put up their hands each year to take on this role.
Congratulations to the children of St Thomas More's for your willingness to step out of your comfort zone (wonderful team spirit, exceptional sportsmanship and positive attitude.
Special commendation to
• Grade 3/4 Girls Hanson-Bye - 3rd Place Division 2
• Grade 3/4 Boys Ralph Cameron - Runners Up Division 1
Our boys team is now eligible to compete in the Primary School State Championships in Launceston on the first weekend of December. Congratulations and good luck boys and coaches.
Mrs Zegveld
Please enjoy some photo's Mrs Zegveld managed to take over the two weekends, unfortunately she couldn't get every team but she sure tried - some fantastic photo's there!
Reminder - Free Schoolwide Eye Examination
STM is pleased to announce that we will be offering comprehensive eye examinations for students in Grades 1-6 in Term 4 (our Prep students have already received eye screening earlier this term).
Please refer to the Compass event for full details. If you would like your child to participate in this activity, please consent via the Compass event before next Wednesday, 3rd November. Please decline this event if your child has had a recent eye examination or will otherwise not be participating.
Thank you to those who have already responded.
Emergency Practice
Within the next few weeks, whilst at recess or lunch we will hold an unannounced emergency practice with staff & students, to test our response to a potential scenario that staff identify a threat warranting the school go into lockdown (opposite to evacuation).
Like for fire evacuation drills, we recognised the worth to test this process. We have plans in place to make this practice as least disruptive as possible.
If you have queries please call our Safety Officer, Simon Natoli on 0400 105 476.
COVID-19 Vaccinations for students aged 12 or over
COVID-19 VACCINATIONS FOR STUDENTS AGED 12 OR OVER
All students aged 12 or above are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
As you may be aware there have been clinics held in colleges to vaccinate year 11 and 12 students, but there is not a current plan for a state-wide high school program.
However, there are several different options available for parents to have their students aged 12 or above vaccinated – these include:
1. State-run Pfizer clinics – appointments can be made by visiting www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au/booking or calling the Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738.
2. GPs – contact a participating GP directly to make a booking.
3. Pharmacies – find a participating pharmacy near you at www.findapharmacy.com.au
Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your family, and the wider community from COVID-19.
Young people under the age of 16 are encouraged to attend their vaccination appointment with a parent or guardian.
Information from the Australian Government about COVID-19 vaccines is available to support your child in understanding more about vaccination. For example, take a look at Get the facts on COVID-19 and the COVID-19 Youth community kit.
Please find attached the Parish bulletin for this coming week.
