MYSTICISM & MINDFULNESS
“Westerners, including Christians, are rediscovering the value of nonduality: a way of thinking, acting, reconciling, boundary-crossing, and bridge-building based on inner experience of God and God’s Spirit moving in the world. We’re not throwing out our rational mind, but we’re adding nondual, mystical, contemplative consciousness.”
– Fr Richard Rohr
Are we aware of the sacredness of the mundane? The imminent presence of God as we go about the lives we lead, and the work we do? The movement of modernism, the proliferation of the scientific method, the incredible advancements of technology, and the sheer volume of knowledge and information available to us in our pockets has impacted the way we understand our faith. To many it appear that our faith has been too literalised, too rationalised, too dogmatised, and that worship, prayer, and encountering the divine has been confined to a discrete set of activities practised at specific times.
How would it reinvigorate our faith, how would it impact our relationships, how would we develop our capacity to reduce our distractedness and enhance our ability to be present, if we were to rediscover the mysticism of our faith? How would we benefit from creating space in our daily lives to experience the awe and wonder of encountering the divine in the seemingly mundane? What can the wisdom of the Christian mystics, and the deep practice of contemplation teach us about how we see the world?
I often heard people quip: She says it as it is! Or: He sees it as it is! It is as though some people in our world, through the relationship-damaging traits of being blunt, direct and rude without kindness, compassion, or understanding, have some undeniable claim on objective truth and have all the answers. But this is not so.
People do not see the world the way it is. People see the world the way they are. Prisoners to our emotions, distracted by our phones, captive to our anxieties about the future. As Albert Einstein said, “We are trying to solve today’s problems with yesterday’s software”.
Though, the Christian mystics have taught us that we can reboot and reset our systems through the practice of contemplation, meditation and mindfulness:
“Through a regular practice of contemplation we can awaken to the profound presence of the unitive Spirit, which then gives us the courage and capacity to face the paradox that everything is—ourselves included. Higher levels of consciousness always allow us to include and understand more. Deeper levels of divine union allow us to forgive and show compassion toward more and more, even those we are not naturally attracted to, and even our enemies.” – Fr Richard Rohr
In meditation, the goal is not to become ‘a meditator’, not even a good one. Rather, it is to dissolve the apparent boundary between meditation and the rest of life. Because, as we soon discover, no such boundary exists. The clarity and freedom you can experience in periods of meditation are no different than the clarity and freedom we can experience in our lives, in our relationships, at work, when stuck in traffic, even when receiving a confronting diagnosis from a doctor.
Being mindful is not a matter of thinking more clearly about experience, it is the act of experiencing more clearly.
St Thomas More’s Catholic School is actively providing opportunities, learning, and curriculum for our students to develop this skill set of mindfulness, stillness, meditation and presence. Our students engage in the stillness of prayer at the start of every school day, encouraging them to encounter and experience the imminent presence of God in our community. Also, every Tuesday following first break we have school-wide Christian meditation, where the entire school pauses for 10 minutes to participate in a period of stillness and reflection.
Additionally, our school is committed to the delivery of The Resilience Project curriculum, which is built on the GEM Principles: gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness. Our students therefore have regular lessons on mindfulness with age-appropriate resources, experiences, and outcomes. These learning opportunities for our students equate to them downloading the software of today, the skills and information they need to move toward stillness and presence.
The enemy of presence is choice. We have so many options, excuses, and opportunities to give into distractedness. But the development of mindfulness, the art of contemplation, the patience of stillness, and the wisdom of the mystics can teach, show us, how to see and experience the presence of God right where we are, right here, right, now.
I’ll end with a tired, but powerful, aphorism that urges us towards presence in every moment: Every moment is a gift. That’s why we call it: the present.

CHAZ MOSTERT VISIT - OPTUS DIGITAL FOOTPRINT PROGRAM!
Yesterday, St Thomas More's Catholic School had the incredible opportunity to host V8 Supercar champion Chaz Mostert as part of the Optus Digital Thumbprint program. Our Grade 5/6 students gathered with excitement to hear from one of Australia’s most recognised motorsport drivers, who shared important insights on digital citizenship and online safety.
Chaz, a Bathurst 1000 winner and driver of the Mobil 1™ Optus Racing Mustang, delivered an engaging and impactful presentation, emphasising the importance of making smart choices online, understanding digital footprints, and treating others with respect in the digital world. His relaxed style, combined with real-world examples, left a lasting impression on our students.
Our students also had the fantastic opportunity to ask Chaz some questions, snap a photo with him, and walk away with some Optus-branded merchandise – a little something to remember the day!
We are incredibly grateful to the team at Optus for making this experience possible. A special thanks to Kerryn for her remarkable organisation and to Jayson for bringing the dream to life for so many of our students. Their work behind the scenes ensured the event ran smoothly and provided a truly memorable learning experience for all involved.
Our thanks also go to our fantastic Office Team – Shannyn Hodgetts, Sharon Woolridge, Sarah White, and Vanessa Wilson – for their power of work behind the scenes. Their coordination and support ensured everything ran seamlessly from start to finish.
Finally, a massive thank you to Chaz Mostert for generously giving his time to inspire our young learners. His message of safe and responsible online behaviour is one that will no doubt resonate with our students as they navigate the digital world with confidence and care.
This event highlighted not just the power of positive role models but also the strength of community partnerships in educating and empowering our students.

A THRILLING DAY AT SYMMONS PLAINS - PIT LANE TOUR!
Today, 16 very excited Grade 5/6 students had the incredible opportunity to step behind the scenes of the Supercars world at Symmons Plains Raceway as part of a Pit Lane Tour. This unforgettable experience was made possible through the generosity of Optus, who not only sponsored the event but also covered all transport costs, ensuring it was completely free for our lucky students.
The students, selected through a competition that saw many eager applications, were buzzing with excitement as the bus pulled up to the track. Greeted by Kerryn and Jayson from Optus, the group was escorted to a prime position to watch Practice Race 1, where they got a taste of the speed and adrenaline of professional motorsport. Eyes wide and hands gripping the fence, they watched as the powerful V8s roared past at breathtaking speeds.
Following the race, our students were guided to the Walkinshaw Andretti United pit area, where they were given an exclusive look at the team operations, the high-performance cars, and the intense preparation that goes into each race.
This experience would not have been possible without the wonderful support from Kerryn and Jayson at Optus, who organised every detail with such care and enthusiasm. A special thanks to our amazing Grade 5/6 staff team who accompanied the students and ensured everything ran smoothly.
Opportunities like these show the strength of community partnerships and the lasting impact they can have on our students' experiences. We are truly grateful to Optus and Walkinshaw Andretti United for making this day such a roaring success!
KINDER EXCURSION TO QVMAG!
On Monday (5th May), our Kinder students enjoyed a wonderful excursion to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery at Royal Park.
They explored The First Tasmanians exhibit and learnt about how the Tasmanian Aboriginal people lived before European settlement. It was a rich and moving experience that provided students with a respectful understanding of our island's history and culture.
The children also visited the Gentle Protagonist exhibition by Michael McWilliams, which showcased captivating paintings of Tasmanian wildlife and landscapes. The students were fascinated by the artist's depictions of native and introduced animals, beautifully brought to life through stunning brushwork.
After the gallery tour, the children enjoyed lunch and some well-earned playtime at the Royal Park playground.
A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated Kinder teaching team for organising and leading such a valuable learning experience, and to our wonderful parent helpers who supported and supervised throughout the day. Your efforts helped make the excursion both safe and successful.

I would also like to say a huge thank you to my drama teacher, Mrs Edwards, for teaching me how to be brave and courageous. Another thank you goes to my amazing family, especially my mum. She was the person who encouraged me to enter the competitions in the first place!
There are so many incredible people in my life who have helped me believe in myself and reach for my goals. Even though my time in the Primary section of the competitions is over, it doesn’t mean the support ends. People who encouraged me shouldn’t be forgotten!
So, Mrs Edwards, you made me feel like a star and helped others shine just as brightly. And to all my teachers and friends who came to watch and support me—make sure you continue to cheer on everyone who believes they are stars too."
