Jesus opens our eyes to the reality of God's presence in our midst, in the goodness of people and in the tenderness of life, even in its vulnerability. He opens our ears to hear the word of God spoken to us by others, revealed to us through the created world.
There is an eschatological dimension to being open to the word of God, because we are opened to hear something from the future. The prophets always speak about this future in the present tense. They see it happening already. Isaiah proclaims, ‘Here is your God!’ and the world is transformed. Jesus says ‘Be open.’ The good news always opens us to future possibilities, to personal and communal transformation, to a new creation. With the word of God, the future invades our present.
Although the eschatological future is already present to us, it is only unfolding, it has not yet opened completely. We still judge each other by appearances. We still miss the presence of God in the poor and the dispossessed, in those who suffer from disease or war or loneliness. We still shun those of another race, or those who have been shaped by another culture, or those who worship God in a different way. Although the eschatological future is already present, we have not yet put aside all of the biases of the past, we have not yet been fully transformed. But God has spoken, God has come to save us. God is trustworthy; God keeps faith forever.

Dear Families,
Wishing all our Dads a Happy Father’s Day on Sunday. I hope you have an enjoyable day with your family. It was great to see so many of our fathers/grandfathers/uncles of our children today at our Father’s Day Breakfast, and great to have the opportunity to have a chat with many of you. Last week I mentioned the positive impact a good male role model can have on our children’s lives, with studies showing an improvement in both children’s academic results and behaviour. It needs to be something as simple as 10 minutes of uninterrupted time a day, where your child shares their interest and their day with you. Some of you may recall the old Cat Stephens song Father and Son, where the father was too busy with work to interact with his son, as the son grows up, he is just like his dad, becoming too busy with his work to interact with his son. Let us remember that nothing can be more important than our children. Also, I would like to thank our staff and P&F who prepared our breakfast, again another wonderful effort, thanks. We'll share some photos next week.
This week was Teacher Assistant Appreciation Week. I am sure you’ll join me in thanking all our wonderful Teacher Assistants and Support Staff who are always there to support your child.
We have received our 2021 NAPLAN results and I am pleased to inform you that all our students who sat the assessment achieved at or above National Minimum Standards for Reading, Writing and Numeracy. This is a great achievement by our students, our dedicated teaching and support team and yourselves. It is our combined efforts that provide our children with many opportunities to succeed. Please follow this link to see ACARA's media statement about 2021 NAPLAN.
Yesterday was a glorious Spring Day, our children really enjoyed themselves outside in the sun. I was pleased to see some of our students wearing hats and putting on sunscreen. From the first of September, we expect our students to wear hats outside, this is a recommendation from the Cancer Council as UV rates start to increase in September. Sunscreen is available for students in their classroom and at our office.
Last weekend Sr Virgil a former St Thomas More’s student, a Sister of Saint Joseph and a Catholic School teacher and principal passed away. I ask you to keep Sr Margaret, the Sisters of Saint Joseph and Sr Virgil’s family in your prayers. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
It has come to my attention that there has been some chatter over Facebook and possibly other messaging apps regarding rules on our playground and our teachers apparently banning children from playing in certain areas or with other children. To clarify, in general the playground is accessible for all students to move freely and to play with who they want. We have designated soccer fields for grades to use, and when the oval is closed, we have designated basketball courts, this is to prevent accidents between our younger and older children. At times we may suggest children don’t play with each other, and this is usually because they need a break from each other. If we have a major concern with your child’s playground behaviour a teacher will be in contact with you about this. If you hear something that doesn’t sound right, please clarify with your child’s teacher, the best source of the truth is your child’s teacher or a School Leadership Team member, not Facebook.
Have a great week.
