Feast of the Assumption of Mary
A mother carries her child in her womb, giving that child a share in her own life. What if a child were able to share its life with its mother? This is what we believe happened between our Risen Lord and his mother, Mary.
It is our faith that our Lord nourishes Mary with His Resurrection life, meaning that her bodysoul, her total humanity, is suffused with His Divine glory.
She grace-fully made the transition from earthly to heavenly existence without the wrenching apart of body and soul which we may expect. This is what we mean by ‘The Assumption’.
This has been believed and celebrated since the early centuries of the church. Why was it only proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1950? I think because in the first half of the 20th century tens of millions were killed in wars, death camps and in the Russian and China Communist dictatorships.
The Holy Spirit needed to remind the world that human beings are bodysouls made for transfiguration, not disfiguration by starvation, torture, massacre and disposal like animal carcasses.
We could pause for a moment to pray that we may share in the gift of transfigured bodies at the end of history.

Dear Families,
On Wednesday we celebrated Catholic Education Week with a Combined Schools’ Mass and Staff Recognition Awards. Despite the inclement weather, it was great to see our Catholic School G6 students from across the Northern Region and representatives from St Patrick’s College were able to come together and celebrate Mass and a BBQ lunch.
In the evening representatives from the Northern Region Catholic Schools staff gathered in our hall for the Recognition Awards. I would like to congratulate Mrs Kim McInnes, our former Board Chair for receiving a 25 years’ Service Award and Fr Mark Freeman who received an Exemplary Contribution to Catholic Education Award. I’m sure you’ll all agree Fr Mark deserves this award as he goes above and beyond to support our schools.
In all that he does, Fr Mark puts into action the system’s strategic priorities of being Student Focused, Christ Centred and Learning for Life. His active support of Catholic education, guidance at a number of Catholic schools across the state or at the system-level and his sharing of his knowledge and empathy are highly valued by the system. Fr Mark’s focus on the needs of the students, their families and staff for the benefit of all and not just at the local community level makes him a worthy recipient of this Award. This week we farewell Kayla (G3/4T) and Ethan (G1/2T) who will be going to Nigeria for a period of time. We wish Kayla, Ethan, and their family all the best and safe travels.
Today I was fortunate enough to spend some time at the Gorge with our G1/2 on their excursion. It was great to see them outside, enjoying the sunshine and learning. The children were very keen to share with me the miniature bark canoes they had made, their bark paintings and the traditional games they were learning about.
Each week I like to take the time to wander around our playground to observe how our children are interacting, and I am always pleased that I am seeing our students cooperating and playing imaginatively. Two examples I’d like to share from this week are, some G5/6 girls playing a game of ‘duck, duck, goose’ with some Prep students. It was great to see our Preps and G5/6 playing happily together, and I even had the opportunity to have a turn! The second example is one of imaginative and creative play, where some of our G2’s created a sculpture of a chicken out of mud from our playground. Although this play was very messy, it really demonstrated children playing together using their imagination. As I have mentioned in previous newsletters, it is very important for a child’s development that they have opportunities for imaginative and creative play. As the weather starts to warm up it is a good opportunity for our children to have time outside for unstructured play, and sometimes it is ok if it does get messy!
Have a great week.
Kind Regards,
Shayne Kidd
